The great starstone-birthstone controversy has raged for so long it would take a wizard to straighten it all out so I brought one (above) with me to the debate! You have the choice of selecting a stone for the day you were born, the birth month, zodiac sign, season of the year, religious choice, and/or by the color if you choose a synthetic stone. Whew! just thinking about all those choices can give you a headache!
Humanity is beginning to rediscover the almost forgotten healing arts based on earth energies that is thought to be inherent in several different stones. Crystals and minerals were the first thought to contain the necessary power used in healing many types of sicknesses. Next came the gemstones themselves and the clearer and more perfect, the more power they contained.
Amulets were made of various combinations which were thought to ward off evils, sickness and bad luck while imparting to the wearer the powers to do mighty things. For example: an ancient circular stone was believed to embody the powers of strength and that is why they were worn as arm bands. A 10,000year old shaman was discovered in the Italian Alps with a similar arm band in place. Then there is the Pi disk from China that is a protective device worn since ancient times.
Then, to further confuse the issue, along about 1300 B.C. a few gemstones acquired a religious significance! Gemstones became associated with the twelve tribes of Israel in Exodus 28:17-21. Thus jewish people can choose their gemstone based on their heritage, or tribal names.
The following list of tribal stones have had the gemstone names changed to use the modern names. And to make it even more confusing; there are many different lists, and the gemstone names vary according to the interpretation of the list maker!!! So if you are of the Jewish persuasion this list should help you out...uhhh maybe just a little.
Ages before we had the modern twelve-month calendar, astrologers endowed the symbolism of early religious beliefs to the various gemstones assigned to the zodiac. The Diamond first belonging to Libra and later assigned to Aries! Below is a list of the various stones in the order they are thought to be the closest to vibrate to their particular sign.
George Kunz, in his book "The Curious Lore of Precious Stones", states that Christianity also had a bearing on the naming of specific gemstones for the twelve Guardian Angels and he lists the following which includes the Angels and the Apostles:
There are many other lists out there, almost as many as there are researchers. Not that the researchers have not done there job...it's just that most of this lore has suffered many translations and come up, like other historical facts, slightly askew.
Did you know that you can actually choose your birthstone by the day of the week??? Yepersir, by the day of the week! Did you also know that if you like, you can choose synthetic stones by their colors???
Poem: Sunday's Child
Mondays child is fair of face,
Tuesdays child is full of grace,
Wednesdays child is full of woe,
Thursdays child has far to go,
Fridays child is loving and giving,
Saturdays child works hard for his living,
And the child that is born on the Sabbath day
Is bonny and blithe, and good and gay.
Then along came the 18th century when the gemstones became associated with a specific month. The following is the standard list that most jewelers use today and my last word on the subject!!! I am totally confused about the stone that is best for me but I know what I vibrate to (like) more than the others so that is the "birthstone" I claim for me...The beautiful Amethyst! If a stone makes you feel good, or better, or luckier, then that is your stone; no matter what all the charts in the world may tell you.!!!
All this controversy makes me a little dizzy!!! I think I'll go enjoy a cup of coffee. Wish you could join me!!
